United Recovery Project California

For many individuals struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, entering detox is the first step in recovery. Drug and alcohol detox is important in helping those with a substance use disorder overcome addiction because it gives them the necessary support to flush the substances out of their system. A medical detox center helps by providing a safe place to detox with the support needed to do so safely.

As a medical detox center in Southern California, we’re here to help. Contact our team at United Recovery California to find out more about our medical detox center.

Why Go to a Medical Detox Center for Detoxification?

medical detox program californiaA medical detox center is ideal for going through withdrawal and detoxification if a person has a strong or dangerous addiction to a substance. A medical detox center may offer inpatient or outpatient services, but the client receives excellent care regardless of the type chosen.

Which Is Better, Inpatient or Outpatient Detox?

The type of detox that is best for a client depends on the disorder(s) and the kind of care they need. For someone with a serious, dangerous addiction, inpatient treatment may be more beneficial. It offers around-the-clock care and support to prevent dangerous or potentially life-threatening symptoms of withdrawal.

Outpatient detox works well for people who have strong support systems and guidance outside the program. For people who can’t take time off work or other responsibilities, this is an excellent way to get care without staying in a residential program. Clients meet with providers several hours a day, a few days a week, in these luxury treatment programs.

What Should You Expect In a Medical Detox Center?

There are different things to expect depending on the substance abuse treatment program that is chosen. A residential program is run a little differently than an outpatient program, for example. Each of these is slightly different because they offer specialized services in varied time frames:

  • Residential detox: Residential detox is a 24-hour program. This may last several days and require the client to stay at the clinic or hospital. A residential detox is most often used for those heavily addicted to substances that could cause painful or dangerous withdrawal symptoms. In residential detox, clients have 24-hour monitoring and care, so they may take the time to relax and focus on getting through these symptoms and on the road to a healthier life.
  • Outpatient detox: Outpatient detox is beneficial for those with other responsibilities but who also need support. Outpatient detox might require the person to come to the medical facility to pick up medications or talk to a provider about how a taper is going. They do not stay overnight.
  • Intensive outpatient program: An IOP is more intensive than typical detox. Clients may go to the clinic or hospital daily for several hours to manage their symptoms, but they return home at night or during off-hours.
  • Partial hospitalization program: A PHP is similar to an intensive outpatient program, though it may be even more intensive. Usually, clients go to the medical facility every day for most of the day. They do this until they can safely detox from the drugs or alcohol they were using. This may also be a good program for those with mental illness concerns or dual diagnoses.
