Due to the struggles that are associated with alcohol and drug dependence, many individuals do not know where to begin.
Fortunately long term sobriety can be achieved if you make use of proven rehabilitation strategies because addiction is a treatable disease. We will explain how a sober future is possible for you or someone you care about if an holistic treatment method is adopted.
What is Addiction Rehab (Rehabilitation)?
When we talk about addiction ‘rehab’, it encompasses therapeutic interventions and medical treatments needed to tackle dependencies on substances such as alcohol (‘alcohol rehab‘) and illegal substances (‘drug rehab‘). There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to rehab because it should be tailored to your lifestyle and may incorporate detoxification, inpatient and outpatient support, and extended aftercare programs.

What are the treatment options available in California
Identifying and healing the root causes behind your drug or alcohol addiction can be achieved through the use of an holistic treatment approach. Although addiction symptoms need to be overcome, life skills must also be learnt in order to focus on the primary causes of your dependency.
Private Residential Treatment
Residential treatment is a form of inpatient care where clients remain at the facility for detox & rehabilitative therapy.
One of the key benefits is having 24/7 treatment and care.
Leaving your home environment and entering a rehab center will cushion you against the stressors that impact your use of substances.
When you reside in a safe and supportive environment you can protect yourself against relapse and improve the chances of finishing your rehab program. When you struggle with a serious substance dependency, or you suffer from a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder, a residential treatment program is strongly recommended.
We know that the early stages of recovery are difficult and after a residential treatment program, you need to stay focused to maintain your sobriety. When you have completed your residential addiction treatment program you must focus on becoming more autonomous and set new goals and challenges.

Sober Living Programs
You will receive support and guidance from a sober living program to help you navigate your future more effectively. Sober living programs include:
- Sending a house manager to see how you are doing regularly
- Developing the sorts of behaviors that are acceptable in recovery
- Working on supportive and positive connections with others in recovery
Detox Only Programs
The process of detoxing a substance from your body is the first step towards rehab, as it rids the system of the substance and puts an end to your physical dependence. Symptoms of withdrawal typically begin during detox and your body begins to learn to function without alcohol or substances it was physically dependent on.
Once you overcome the difficult phase of physical withdrawal you will enter the second part of your recovery journey, working to heal from the root causes of psychological dependency in order to put a stop to the cycle of abuse.
Many drugs drive withdrawal and cravings for a period of time after they have been cleared from your system.
Your chances of relapse can be mitigated as you learn the skills necessary to cope with your new life.
Outpatient Programs
By engaging in an outpatient program you have more flexibility, as you will visit the rehab center for treatment weekly and continue work or family commitments.
Outpatient programs offer value through:
- Education on abusing drugs
- Group therapy and individual counseling as vehicles for long-term recovery – You can expect to be enrolled in an outpatient program for a minimum of three months, and may continue the program for a year if required.
Paying for Private Treatment
Private treatment should be settled yourself or claimed through your health insurance. Most insurance providers contribute to some of the costs associated with drug and alcohol rehab, such as a medically-supervised detox, rehab treatment, and medical supplies, as well as post-treatment support. Your provider along with policy terms and conditions will provide details on how much cover you can claim. We advise that you confirm the amount you can claim against your policy before enrolling in a rehab program. Check out our Verify Your Insurance page to find out about the cover you qualify for.
Clients will have to pay for the cost of treatment if they do not claim via their insurance policy. Some addiction treatment facilities will provide payment plans to clients who are unable to pay the full cost of treatment. Find out if you’re eligible through private health insurance
State Funded Programs
If you are battling with drug or alcohol use disorder and have no financial means to pay for private rehab, you may be eligible for a state-funded rehabilitation program.
These programs use government funds from state budgets, Medicaid and federal government to support recovery with:
1. Services for a safe detox (medically-assisted if required.
2. Addiction counseling, therapy and extended support services
State-funded rehab programs are available to individuals who have no private health insurance or who live in poorer households. During the application process you will need:
1. Medical information about your addiction issues
2. Evidence of where you live
3. Proof of what you earn

Maintaining Addiction Recovery in California
Maintaining your recovery can feel overwhelming when you return to normal life after leaving rehab. When you were in rehab the environment was controlled and you had support from professionals. Your coping skills will be put to the test when you leave rehab, as you may experience some challenges that you still need to learn to deal with. Clients who had severe dependencies find long term recovery more difficult when they leave rehab if they do not have a social support structure. Guidance and aftercare support is integral in the early stages of recovery to help prevent relapse.

Support groups remain vital to long-term recovery as they recognize the need for social connections in recovery.
When you join a group that follows the 12 steps, like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, you will receive ongoing support via local meetings. You will become empowered from other people’s experiences and share your own unique experiences. Support groups provide them with vital tools to stay sober, allowing them to be accountable for their own journey in recovery.
