What is Addiction Rehab (Rehabilitation)?
The term substance ‘rehab’ is applicable to all of the medical and therapeutic treatments used to help individuals who are struggling with dependencies on recreational, illegal and prescription substances. Rehab treatments are more successful when they are personalized to your individual needs, and may include inpatient programs, outpatient programs, medically-managed detoxes and aftercare support programs.

What are the treatment options available in Excelsior?
A consolidated treatment approach is the most successful way to identify and address the prime causes of drug or alcohol use disorders. Learning coping strategies to treat the primary causes of your substance dependency is just as important as treating the symptoms of addiction.
Private Residential Programs
Living at a treatment center and having all of your treatments there is known as a residential rehab program. Access to 24-hour support and treatment is obviously one of the key benefits. If you leave your home and move into a rehab facility, you can remove yourself from vulnerabilities to triggers that influenced your decision to abuse substances or alcohol.
When the environment around you is supportive, relapse is far less likely and you are more likely to complete your residential treatment programme. If you suffer with co-occurring disorders, dual diagnosis or an intense dependency, a residential program is better suited to meet your treatment needs. Taking part in a residential rehab program is the most effective way to get sober, and sustaining it demands persistent focus because maintaining recovery is difficult during the first year. After you complete your residential treatment program your priority will be your transition to greater independence as you focus on what you want from your life free from drugs or alcohol.

Sober Living Programs
Sober living programs help individuals in recovery build further control over their lives, with support and some guidance. Sober living programs usually have:
- Sending a house manager to see how you are doing daily
- Developing the kinds of behaviors that are needed in recovery
- Developing supportive and constructive relations with peers in recovery
Detox Only Programs
Taking part in a drug or alcohol detoxification program is a crucial stage in rehab as it addresses your physical dependency by eliminating substances from your system. As your body gets used to functioning without substances in your system, you may experience the symptoms of withdrawal.
This detox phase marks the beginning of your rehabilitation process, the next stage is to identify and address the root causes of your addiction, so that the pattern does not continue. Many drugs result in withdrawal and cravings for a long time after they have been cleared from your system. Your odds of relapsing will be mitigated as you build on the important skills required to cope with your new life.
Outpatient Programs
By enrolling in an outpatient program you have more flexibility, by visiting the rehabilitation center for treatment weekly and continue work or family commitments.
Outpatient programs help you with:
- Education around substance abuse
- Counseling services and therapy with the use of group support or one-to-one sessions – The required duration of an outpatient program is three months and continue for longer than a year, this will depend on your own needs.
Paying for Private Treatment
Private treatment needs to be self-funded or claimed through your insurance policy. In general, insurance companies will allow you to claim against the costs of treatment, at least partially, including a medically assisted detox, treatment program, and post-treatment care. The total amount you are able to claim will be determined by your policy rules and your provider.
We advise you understand how much cover you can claim for before enrolling in a program. Our Verify Your Insurance page can help you find out the amount of cover you can claim for. Clients will have to pay for the cost of treatment if they do not claim from their insurance policy. Some facilities may provide payment plans when clients find the costs unaffordable upfront.
State Funded Programs
If you want to overcome your substance or alcohol problems but have limited resources to pay for private rehab, you should consider a state-funded rehabilitation program. With the help of stipends from a combination of state, federal and Medicaid budgets, these types of programs will remove financial barriers to treatment by providing:
- Medical detoxes
- Addiction treatment programs including extended care
People without private health cover or live in households with low combined income may enroll for a state-funded rehab program. To start the application, you will need to submit:
- Proof of living arrangements
- Proof of income
- Your medical history and information about your substance issues
- Evidence that you can stay in the US legally
