It can feel so lonely when you or someone you love has difficulties with alcohol or drug use, that you don’t know how to help. Although addiction is a disease, it can be managed when evidence-based treatments are explored. Long term recovery from addiction is achievable.

The following page will explain integrated approaches to treatment and how you or someone you love can begin and maintain a sober, drug and alcohol free life.

What is Addiction Rehab (Rehabilitation)?

When we mention addiction ‘rehabilitation’, we mean the combination of medical and therapeutic treatments applied to resolve dependencies on alcohol and drugs (including prescription medications).

There is no ‘single right’ approach to rehab because it needs to be tailored to your lifestyle and may incorporate detox, inpatient and outpatient care, and extended relapse prevention programs.

What are the treatment options available in Rancho Palos Verdes?

A consolidated treatment approach is the most successful way to tackle the root causes of drug or alcohol dependencies. Addiction symptoms should be treated but learning new life skills empowers you to face the issues that started your drug or alcohol problem.

Private Residential Programs near Rancho Palos Verdes

Residential addiction rehab programs require you to stay at the rehab facility and take part in your treatments on-site. The main benefit is the ability to have holistic support and treatment throughout the day.

By moving out of your home environment and into a rehab facility, you will protect yourself from the those stressful triggers that are partly responsible for you developing a drug use disorder. By remaining in a controlled and supportive environment, you have a higher chance of finishing your addiction treatment program while avoiding relapse and its associated pitfalls.

A residential treatment program delivers the best results when you have a dual diagnosis, a complex substance dependency or co-occurring illnesses. An inpatient program will support you with getting sober, but note that maintaining sobriety requires persistent effort as the first few months of recovery are usually difficult. After you complete your residential rehab program your priority will be on transitioning to greater independence as you focus on what you want from your new sober life.

Sober Living Programs

Sober living rehab programs enable you to have more stability in your life, with guidance and supportive structures. The programs incorporate:

  1. A house manager who visits you daily
  2. Supporting you on acceptable ways to behave in recovery
  3. Fostering necessary relationships with others in recovery who understand your experiences

Outpatient Programs

Outpatient rehab programs are considered to be flexible because they allow you to have therapy at the rehab facility and maintain any career or family obligations.

Outpatient programs offer recovery services through:

  1. Education on drug or alcohol use
  2. Therapy and psychological interventions including group and individualized therapy – Outpatient treatment programs should last anywhere from 3-4 months to a year, this will depend on your requirements.

Detox Only Programs

Taking part in a detoxification program is an important hurdle in rehab as it tackles your physical dependency by eliminating substances from your system. Withdrawal symptoms are the body’s response to detoxification, as it starts getting used to working without drugs or alcohol.

This is just the beginning of the rehab process, the next stage is to tackle and overcome the underlining causes of your addiction, so that the pattern does not happen again. A number of substances cause temporary cravings and withdrawal symptoms after you have completed detoxification. Learning the necessary skills can minimize your odds of relapse as you focus on your new life.

Paying for Private Treatment

The private treatment costs may be claimed back through your health insurance or funded through your own personal means. Many insurance companies will cover at least parts of your rehab treatment, including medical detox, a treatment program, and any medications you may need.

The type of cover given will depend on the fine print of your policy and your provider’s. We advise that you double check on the amount covered for treatment prior to enrolling for treatment. To find out what you could be entitled to, please go to our Verify Your Insurance page.

If you choose not to claim against your policy, the balance of your treatment programme will need to be covered directly. Some treatment facilities may offer a payment plan to those who are unable to pay the whole amount.

Maintaining Addiction Recovery in Rancho Palos Verdes

Leaving a rehab center and returning home can be hard for people in the early stages of recovery. The rehab environment was controlled and safe, and you were given professional support. Once you leave rehab there may be new triggers that put your coping skills to the test. If you had a severe dependency or if you leave rehab without the appropriate social support, you will find long term recovery to be more challenging. Relapse can occur when you don’t have aftercare to support you in your new-found sobriety.

Aftercare & Alumni Programs

An aftercare program continues to provide recovery support when you return to your home environment. Relapse rates can be as high as 60%, and because life has its own challenges, aftercare support is an important tool to support your long-term recovery.

Once you reach completion of your treatment program you should think about the counseling and therapies most beneficial to long-term abstinence and an aftercare plan will be developed to help you. After completing your addiction treatment program you will become eligible to join an alumni community program so you can stay in contact with staff and others in recovery.

With the help from this network you will be able to attend social events and receive support and advice from other former clients who are in recovery as well. You may decide to pay the favor forward, by offering your support to other active members in recovery.

Support Groups (Fellowship Meetings)

Support groups are an important function of long-term recovery because social responsibilities enable long-lasting sobriety. To maintain addiction recovery, can receive long-term recovery support if you find local groups like Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous and attend any 12-step meetings.

During support group meetings, you will share and learn from the journeys of others. Many people in recovery attend nearby meetings to assist them in the early and later stages of addiction recovery. Support groups provide them with the important tools to maintain sobriety, allowing them to take responsibility for their recovery.

Support for Families & Children Affected by Addiction

Each person in a family is hurt, to different degrees, by addiction. Support is crucial for all members of a family, not just the individual struggling with the dependency.

Support groups for families has two key benefits: you can support yourself and the individual overcoming substance dependence. Some important support groups for families and children affected by addiction include:

  • Parents of Addicted Loved Ones
  • SMART Recovery Family & Friends
  • NAMI Family Support Groups
  • Al-Anon
  • Families Anonymous
